Aliya allowed Matt to carry her, even though she was perfectly capable of walking. Erik was a bastard, but he’d only hurt her enough to make it look convincing. As much as she disagreed with his method, his plan worked and she was being escorted into the very building she needed access to. So why did she feel as if she’d instigated the ultimate betrayal?

She looked up at Matt’s side profile, taking in those full lips that had kissed her a few seconds ago and the set of his jaw which gave away how angry he was on her behalf. She was using him to get what she wanted. Correction, what she needed to keep Erik happy, and although it left her empty inside, she had no choice. She wished things were different. She wished they had just been two people who had met in a bar, but they were an alien and an alien hunter, even if he didn’t realise it yet.

‘I’ll ask one of our doctors to give you a once over,’ Matt said, ‘and if she recommends a trip to Accident & Emergency, I’ll carry you there myself.’

‘I told you I’m fine,’ she replied, as Matt shifted her in his arms so he could enter his key code. She held her breath as they crossed the threshold, fully expecting some alien detection alarm to alert him to her deception. She exhaled loudly when they were greeted with silence. It seemed as long as she stayed in human form, she was safe inside ISCU.

‘Hey, Harry. Lady was mugged outside, so I’m going to get her checked over. Will you call down to Doctor Walters,’ Matt called out to the security guard manning the desk, who raised his hand in acknowledgement.

‘He doesn’t seem concerned to see you carrying an injured woman,’ she said. ‘Do you make a habit of rescuing damsels in distress?’

Matt laughed. ‘Hell no, but I do have a certain reputation, so people tend to keep their distance and stay out of my business.’

‘Sounds lonely.’

He stopped walking and looked down into her eyes. ‘I like being alone.’

‘Do you?’

The expression on his face gave a different answer to the one that left his lips.

‘It’s safer being alone.’

Matt adjusted his hold on her so she was higher up against his chest and then resumed walking towards one of the doors off the main reception area. Aliya scanned the area, looking for any indication of where the doors and lifts led to. She’d need to devise a distraction so she could slip away from Matt and search for that damn formula. She also still had to find Blake. He was somewhere in the building, as she could scent another jaktten close-by.

Matt entered his code again into a keypad beside the door and it clicked opened, revealing a small room with a single bed and several cupboards full of medical equipment.

‘I really am ok,’ Aliya said, as he sat her down on the bed. ‘I don’t want to cause a fuss.’

‘Stop talking,’ Matt replied, as he swept his thumb gently over her cut lip.
